HIPS
High Impact Polystyrene (abbreviated HIPS) is a rubber-modified high-impact polystyrene. The thermoplastic material is used in particular in housings of, for example, computers, television sets or telephones. Inside refrigerators, the first, very cold-resistant layer often consists of HIPS. Plastic is also used for plastic toys.
A further field of application of HIPS is the use in 3D printers as a washable carrier material.
HIPS has a density of around 1.04-1.08 g / cm3. In the polystyrene matrix, HIPS contains about 4-12% by weight of a polybutadiene rubber, depending on the type. Partially, flame retardants (DecaBDE, HBCD) are added to the matrix to reduce flammability and combustibility.
